102. Who is actually providing the coverage for psychological treatment?

Many managed care companies subcontract the mental health portion of your coverage to another specialized mental health managed care plan. This means that the company             your insurance card may not be the name of the managed care plan that handles your               health or psychological coverage. In fact, the vast majority of all mental health insurance coverage is handled by a handful of companies, with Magellan being the largest.

Usually, there is a separate toll free telephone number on the back of your insurance card, which will connect you with the company handling your mental health benefits. Sometimes the name of the company will be listed, and other times it will not be listed. If you want to check who covers your mental health benefits, call the toll free number, and ask the person who answers the phone what company they work for, and also ask how the benefits work. Be prepared to be on hold for a considerable amount of time.
