151. What is the cost of not receiving treatment? What effect is the problem having on your personal health, your work, and your family?

Psychological problems frequently increase the impact of physical health problems, and research suggests that stress reduces the functioning of the immune system, making you more susceptible to illness if psychological problems are left untreated. Many health problems brought to family physicians are actually linked to psychological problems, such as sleep disturbances, chronic fatigue, gastrointestinal disturbances, and chronic headaches. (Of course, these symptoms can also have physical causes). Psychological distress increases tension in relationships, and often results in marital or family conflict. Attention and concentration problems are often part of psychological stress, and these symptoms can impair your work effectiveness. That is also true of chronic fatigue and sleep disturbances. When you assess the total impact of psychological distress on your life, you can see that it is important to seek treatment, even if your coverage is minimal. Most psychologists will work out a payment arrangement if your finances are limited and you do not have coverage.
