Do I have an out of network option on my managed care plan?

What is an out of network option?  Many managed care plans offer you the choice of using a  non-network provider, and paying for services in a way similar to typical point of service plans. Typically, choosing to go out of network requires payment of a deductible and a percentage of the fee.

This option gives you considerable freedom to choose a psychologist who can provide the treatment you need without providing additional information to the managed care plan. Check with your plan to determine if you have this option.

Some plans only allow out of network choices if you cannot locate an in-network provider close to your home, or with the specific expertise needed for your problem. Be aware that many plans actively discourage you from exercising your out of network option.
