I am Sally Singer Horwatt.  I've been a clinical psychologist for over 20 years.  I work primarily with adults, although I always seem to have a few adolescents as well.  My oldest patient began working with me at the age of 99 and continued on a weekly basis until she died at the age of 103.

A highlight of my career was the day this strong-willed, initially depressed, woman said, "Now I understand what this group therapy business is all about!"

My practice seems to break out into two main products:
First and predominantly, I do psychotherapy.  I work with people individually, as part of a couple, or in a group  -  sometimes all three.   I can do hypnosis.  I can do crisis intervention and Critical Incident Debriefing.  I can do Employee Assistance, and I can do short-term therapy.  I do them all the time.

I prefer to do long-term group psychotherapy.  After I form a relationship with a person, and we trust each other, it seems that we reach a point of diminishing returns.  I mean, the person's problems often stop manifesting themselves to me, but they haven't gone away.  A mixed group (meaning both genders and different problems) provides the stimulation to challenge the person to change.. to face anxiety, to think on his feet, to increase interpersonal effectiveness.   The group does this for me too.  And, I find that putting each half of a couple in separate groups increases the chances they will get objective feed-back, causing each of them to focus on their own contribution to the marital problems, and stop destructive fighting.  People who want to use psychotherapy to change really benefit from group.I think it's the most potent form of treatment.

The second product is evaluation.  I consult at area nursing homes and help decide how best to treat the person.  I have also consulted at neurology clinics doing neuropsychological evaluations. This work is challenging, as I get to meet a different kind of person than I usually see in my office.

You can link to my Resume to get a better idea about my background. Also, for more information about the treatment I provide, you can follow the Services link.
Currently, I am President-elect of the Virginia Psychological Association, a 1200-member professional society composed of psychologists of all types - clinicians, academicians, researchers, and industrial psychologists.  My main project has been to create the Virginia Research Network.  This is a statewide organization designed to get the practitioners and clinicians to collaborate on studying psychotherapy outcomes. The Newsletter link allows you to review articles I have published for the Virginia Psychological Association.

I also enjoy "giving psychology away" on radio.  In several 5-minute slots a week, I report about what psychologists have learned about topics of current interest such as violence in the schools, POW's and the like.  You can follow the link to Radio Spots to review a selection of these topics.  As you can see, for a clinician, I am pretty research oriented.  The manager has asked me to do a call-in show.  We'll see.
